Advocacy Coordinator

Housing First Minnesota seeks a dynamic Advocacy Coordinator to join our Advocacy Team to support advocacy initiatives, industry engagement, and communications for the organization. Reporting to the Director of Advocacy, the Advocacy Coordinator will manage internal committees, logistics, and communications flow between Housing First Minnesota staff, volunteers, and industry partners to advance the organization’s objectives. This position is both an internal facing role that demands strong organizational, administrative, and writing skills, and is also external facing, engaging key industry audiences and elected officials as necessary.

Housing First Minnesota, formerly the Builders Association of the Twin Cities, is the leading voice for the housing industry and engages in a comprehensive, modern advocacy program on behalf of its members. The advocacy program elements include: legislative policy development & lobbying; regulatory, local, regional policy development & lobbying; research, legal affairs, electoral politics, industry and external communications; grassroots engagement; and issue advocacy campaigns. BATC-Housing First Minnesota is also the proud presenter of the nationally-recognized Parade of Homes marketing events and the Builders and Remodelers Show, the Midwest’s largest homebuilding industry trade show.

Core Tasks

  • Work closely with the Director of Advocacy and Advocacy Team to coordinate and provide  administrative support for all department activities, including administration and event planning for  Housing First Minnesota’s advocacy-related committees

  • Assist in housing policy research

  • Draft communication and outreach materials as necessary, including the composition of advocacy alerts, social media postings, and other industry & advocacy communications

  • Serve as a first point of contact and the liaison between the Advocacy team and the general public, industry members and others on advocacy-related inquiries

  • Organize and coordinate advocacy events and meetings with cross sector attendance to facilitate partnership-building and industry engagement

  • Assist in the maintenance of our grassroots database for engagement, fundraising, and advocacy event participation  

  • Assist in the coordination of Housing Day at the Capitol advocacy events

  • Other activities related to advocacy and government relations as needed 


  • Bachelor's Degree in political science, communications, or related field

  • Prior experience in policy advocacy, political campaigns, or staffing in a local, state or federal elected office desired

  • Strong understanding of legislative and political processes

  • Prior experience with or demonstrated interest in housing and business issues

  • Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills  

  • Ability to handle multiple projects and tasks, set priorities, effectively manage time

  • Proficiency social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, and WordPress
